ABRSM Exams in Thailand

The Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM) exams first took place in Thailand in 1982. Ever since, numerous candidates throughout Thailand have undergone through the curricular and assessments of the ABRSM, many have become able musicians who play important and active roles in music both locally and internationally. The number of examination centres has now increased to cover the whole of Thailand. In June and November, the Board sends examiners from the UK to Thailand to conduct one-to-one Practical examinations of candidates. Written examinations are also offered, in March, June and November. The Associated Board has demonstrated its commitment to teachers with workshops, seminars and promotional meeting. At the end of examination sessions in June and November, the ABRSM Representative holds workshops where teachers have the opportunity of meeting the Board's examiner and seeing a demonstration of live examination.

The ABRSM Chief Executive presented the ABRSM 25th Anniversary Celebratory Concert in June 2007 at the Thailand Cultural Centre. Over 90 selected candidates nationwide who had scored high marks during the past 25 years have been invited to take part in various performances including solo items, ensembles as well as an orchestra. The Concert, which attracted over 2,500 audiences, symbolised years of dedication in musical learning and achievement of pupils, and also of their teachers and parents who have continuously give support and encouragement.

Each year the ABRSM awards scholarships to enable overseas students to study in the UK at one of the four Royal Schools of Music: The Royal Academy of Music and The Royal College of Music in London, The Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester and The Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in Glasgow.

Exam Venues

Theory and Practical examinations will ordinarily be held at Robinson School of Music.

A request for a visit from the examiner to schools or studios that are met with the criteria for satisfactory examining venue, could be discussed and arranged with the Board's Representative, Mrs. Chorlada Bunnag, telephone: 02 259 9900. This visit could be arranged provided that there is a sufficient number of candidates to justify a visit from the examiner.

The schools in Bangkok that have been arranged for a visit from the examiner by the Representative include:

  • Bangkok Patana School
  • Chintakarn Music School
  • Churairat Music School
  • Harrow International School
  • Shrewsbury International School
  • Tamnak Prathom Harp Centre
  • The approved venues in other provinces of Thailand are in Chiangmai, Chonburi, Hat Yai , Khon Kaen, Lampang, Mae Sot, Phuket, Trang and Udorn Thani.

    The candidates may request to sit for their exams at any of the above venues in Bangkok and other provinces for their convenience. The Representative will be happy to help you regarding any aspect of the exams, from supplying syllabuses and entry forms to making sure that you are entirely satisfied with the service you receive, and dealing with any concerns that you may have.
